One of the reasons for the limited ductility of aluminum die casting alloys is the presence of iron within the alloys. The iron is added to minimize soldering sticking of the castings to the unprotected, uncoated steel die, which occurs due to the high injection speed used with die casting. However, the iron addition results in the formation during solidification of needle-shaped iron–aluminum intermetallics, which act as stress raisers and significantly reduce the ductility of the castings.
